As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
